Harusame Replaces
Sapparo House As a New Japanese Restaurant
by Julianna Penneys

Harusame,
2371 Haverford Road in Ardmore, 610-649-7192, had been the go-to place
for beer and sushi when it was Sapparo House.
Now it is a
suburban gem of a Japanese restaurant. The quality of the service
and their presentation is similar at a four star Center City or
Manhattan Asian/Japanese restaurant.
The quantity
and quality of the food, together with the reasonable prices, makes
Harusame extremely appealing.
The tasty
salads are in the $5.00 range, numerous specialty sushi rolls platters
range between $13.50 and $16.50, and the entrees are reasonably-priced
with generous portions.
My companions
and I began our meal with a heaping portion of avocado salad with a
delicious ginger dressing, along with what my companion called the "one
of the best seafood soups he has ever tasted!" Next, we were
presented with a unique assortment of Harusame Special Rolls.
The Valentine
Roll ($13.50) consisted of lobster salad and avocado topped with tobiko
had us negotiating over the last piece!
Equally as
mouth-watering was the White Dragon Roll ($16.50), which is a wonderful
twist on the popular Dragon Roll, consisting of Spicy White Tuna and a
scrumptious Coconut Crunch.
These rolls are
just an example when it comes to the creative rolls Harusame has to
offer.
Next, we
started on Harusame's signature dishes.
The fabulous
Jumbo Shrimp ($18.00) is a lightly fried shrimp sauteed in citrus fruity
sauce. This was definitely one of our favorites, rich in flavor
and a firm consistency.
Complementing
this delicious dish was the Shrimp Hibachi Fried Rice ($10.00)
Restaurant's
manager, Christine Li, reported that Harusame offers a full bar,
including all varieties of top-shelf liquor, as well as over 100
different beers
that are available for dining-in or take-out.
The unique
variety of salads, appetizers, soups, special rolls, entrees, and
desserts are also part of Harusame's catering.
Gift
certificates are available.
Some
background: The Harusame was a Shiratsuyu class destroyer of the
Imperial Japanese Navy.
The head chef,
Tony Harianto, has been working his trade for over a decade, most
recently at the famed RAW in Center City. Harianto works the
kitchen with co-owner Tony Huang, who has been a restauranteur
specializing in Asian/Japanese cuisine for the past 12 years, while
Sushi Chef Harianto creates the sushi rolls at the bar.
The hours of
operation are Monday and Tuesday 2:00 - midnight, Wednesday through
Saturday from 11 a.m. - midnight and Sunday from noon - 11
p.m.
Take out is
always available. Harusame accepts Visa and Mastercard.
